undecorated cylindrical wood stem, with T-shaped bowl having the inscription: Louis Rott 7 US Cav / Sioux Indian Medicine Pipe / Captured at the Battle of Muddy Creek, May 7th 1877
overall length 30-3/7 inches; length of stem 22-1/2 inches length of bowl 9 inches x height 4-1/4 inches
Rott, a Little Bighorn survivor, continued his career with the US 7th Calvary and fought alongside General Miles at the Lame Deer Fight, also known as the Battle of Little Muddy Creek, on May 7–8, 1877. He finished his service in 1878, where he became a NYC mounted police officer until his death in 1897 at the age of 48.
